Perhaps you can recall a time or two in your life where you heard music that changed your ears and mind forever. Mine are a), hearing 2Pac on the radio for the first time as a kid and b), hearing Skrillex for the first time the week the internet went crazy for his My Name Is Skrillex EP in 2010.
I listened to the EP on blast every day for a whirlwind 9 months in which I traveled the globe, shocked by what I was hearing. Considering I am a huge fan of anyone who can orchestrate such a breakthrough moment with music (especially when it rocks you to a soul level), it makes me super excited to see that the Bono of dance music is now making headway into the world of popular rap. A$AP Rocky tapped the rockstar DJ/producer for “Wild For The Night” off his debut album Long.Live.A$AP, a notable release in 2013. The two of them went to the Dominican Republic to shoot the video for the song, and clearly Skrillex (real name Sonny Moore) loaned him perhaps dance music’s most admirable quality, the ardent desire to have fun. A$AP gets my vote for stylish rapper alive. (Side note to other rappers: all black, all designer goods do not equate to style).
