Being on the lips of many as one of 2012’s most buzzing indie bands, it is hard to believe that Saint Motel has only just begun their journey into our hearts. It is only the beginning for these four Los Angeles natives, and we are buckled in for the ride. One by one, each energetic track, like “Puzzle Pieces” snuck out of the studio and familiarized fervent, indie followers with Saint Motel’s rousing and refreshing version of indie punk pop. Saint Motel have a wide range of influences, and therefore, the genre laundry list goes on and on by nature. Without pin-pointed references to compare their innovative style, they may just evade the overflowing indie trash pile.

Voyeur (out yesterday) features songs green with lyrical density and at times, what singer AJ Jackson admits “‘absurd’ subject matter–many of the songs have various levels of subtext that I hope the listener will decipher with repeated listens.” LP highlights include jazz-infused “Benny Goodman,” the smashing drums and rolling pianos of “Puzzle Pieces,” and “1997,” climactic from the get go.
“1997, a recently released single, “starts with a faint, wailing guitar underscoring a simple-structured piano, and lets into a happy-go-lucky, and horn-ornamented pop song. But “At Least I Have Nothing” and “Daydream/Wetdream/Nightmare” are the songs de resistance, tapping into but not limiting themselves to Arctic Monkeys-meets-Shins vibes. The latter, resembling their inventive pop, shifts throughout three varying song parts, but drips sunshine and sand all the way through. Voyeur has summer love written all over it.
The band will embark on a national headlining tour kicking off on July 12th at San Francisco’s Pop Scene, with support on the bulk of the tour from RACES (Frenchkiss). Be sure to catch a show.
