Perfume Genius: Hood

      1. Perfume Genius Hood

Be thankful songs remind us that our time here is brief and to better go about telling people they matter before both mortal parties can no longer speak or break bread. Sometimes it takes a reserved intensity to drive home the fact that the one spoken to through song is a good fit. Mike Hedreas, better known as Perfume Genius, knows this all too well. The Seattle based songwriter has weaved his entire sophomore album — Put Your Back N 2 It around personal experiences and haunting confessions which have helped shape who is he today.

As a whole the record is honest, raw, and painful, foreshadowing the alternative lifestyle. Beyond that lies a unique approach to song, reaching a new depth of emotion. Drawing inspiration from The Innocence Mission, Hedreas is more or less a painter of worlds, playing on the infamous movie score as a way to instruct people to continue on and not look back no matter what curves life throws.

A prime example of this can be found on the track “Hood” which exudes a serious tone, dabbling in a piano-led hymn catering to fear that an old aged love would abruptly end while at the same time calling for social acceptance. If you have questions for life’s complications, allow Put Your Back N 2 It to run for a song or two and, maybe then, you will find what you seek.
