For reasons unknown to me, in many parts of the world fashion isn’t considered an art form, but solely a money making industry. Super glossy, expensive, and clean marketing all contribute to our notions of what is and isn’t fashion. The more expensive the ad is to make the more coveted and status building the product must be. There is, however, a new wave of designers and marketing teams who choose to employ more artisanal techniques in their campaigns. When the people at Rupert Sanderson recruited Margot Bowman for their S/S 13 shoe collection, they tapped onto something important. Yes! Fashion must always be moving forward, like a shark, otherwise it dies, but in order for it to break free out of the commercial world and into the art world means to have unfettered fun with it. Bowman’s finger painted collaged, prehistoric, and colorful painting/ gifs are just that.
