Governor’s Ball: Kanye West

Kanye West is certainly one of the most exciting and innovative artists of the new millennium – and he’ll be the first to tell you that.

With a new album on the way, supported by guerrilla video-projection marketing campaign, and also a new baby on the way with one larger than life lady, it would seem maybe there’s no turning back once you hit the level of exposure that he has. So, controversial as always, he recently released the first single off his album Yeezus, due June 18, offering a battle cry for the people he deems “New Slaves” (I think he means us).  This one had me raising my eyebrows. For such a forward thinking artist, I was really surprised at how much darkness he managed to jam into the 3 minute track, but then again it can’t be easy being Yeezy.  Mourning one’s position in history is inevitable, especially after so much ego-centricity, and it’s exactly his self-referencing attitude that has always made him so memorable (his music of course speaks for itself).  I am really looking forward to seeing him this Sunday at Governor’s Ball to get a taste of the rest of his new material. With the jury out on the upcoming album, enjoy a throwback this Thursday, featuring the very excellent Dwele on vocals, “Flashing Lights”.
