Using only rope and her imagination, San Francisco artist and product designer Windy Chien creates unique works of art and home accessories. Last year she devoted herself to learning a new knot every day for a year, tying a total of 366 by December 31st for the ‘Year of Knots’ project.
The level of complexity and geometric precision Windy puts into her work takes it far beyond the realm of utility and into ritualistic works of beauty.
It is a telling departure from her previous trade at Apple, where she helped build iTunes and the App Store. Like many people in her industry of virtual trades, Windy switched careers in favor of more tangible, hands-on work.
It is a nod to the past and acknowledgment of the primal need we have for physical contact with our creations.
