Versace S/S 2012

“I was thinking of sirens and mermaids, their hot sexuality. And everything I like, and Gianni liked,” says Donatella Versace of her last S/S 2012 collection. And judging from the thunderous applause that greeted the end of the runway show, pretty much everyone else liked it, too. Taking the Spring/Summer season to heart, Donatella created a very timely, very bright-and-balmy, underwater theme. “I thought they looked like Botticelli babes, rising from the sea,” states Donatella’s own protégé and designer Christopher Kane.

Featured were prints of seahorses, shells, and starfish, but executed in a muted pastel palette of lavender, mint green, and sunny yellow that kept the collection from looking overly kiddy. The silhouettes were also a selection of pure class — pencil skirts, shift dresses, goddess gowns, and sleek biker jackets — which made the overall look not only a runway hit, but something you could already see yourself wearing.
