Fashion is not just what we put on, but also what’s underneath, an entire world that has laid down for years and still stands under dresses and skirts. Yes, the subject of this glorious exhibition at Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris is the undergarment: corsets, crinolines, stomach belts, bras and bustles, alongside with other historical devices from the fourteenth century till the nowadays tributes of such designers like Comme des Garçons and Jean Paul Gaultier, that create couture clearly inspired by ancient lingerie.
‘La mécanique des dessous, une histoire indiscrète de la silhouette’ is not merely an exhibition, it can be seen as a sociological investigation of the history of body conception and its consequently metamorphosis through ‘mechanical architectures‘.
