Trendland Governors Ball

T

his past weekend gave way to NYC’s own miniature Coachella in Governor’s Ball Music Festival held on Randall’s Island. The two day festival proved to be all that it was built up to be, showcasing a well rounded and versatile line-up consisting of both more contemporary dance infused acts as well as some long time established icons.

On the DJ/dance forefront an always party rocking Major Lazer that ignited the crowd as usual with their raggae influenced electro bangers, freaky dancing queens and crowd walking emcee. The DJ duo known as Duck Sauce composed of A-Trak and Armand Van Helden gave the crowd a run for their money as well. Looking like they were having a dandy time themselves, they played some of there almighty catchy dance tunes such as “Big Bad Wolf”, “aNYway” and of course Ms. “Barbra Streisand” and pulled the dancing strings on the raging crowd. Not to mention they were accompanied by their giant blow up mascot duck in the background for some extra effect.

Santigold “killed it” on day one pretty much starting the weekends’ party off in style, changing outfits a few times throughout her set, and showing us some of that cute sass and talent that has won her some major popularity in the past years. Her newest record “Disparate Youth” reciprocated a lot of energy from the crowd which was a nice to see, acknowledging that kids(and adults) are keeping up to dated on the hot new indie pop on the scene.

Passion Pit, a band that has taken some criticism in the past for their live performance put on a great show sticking it to all of those skeptical critics. Lead singer Michael Angelakos was all over the stage giving out tons of that signature falsetto energy and practically losing himself in the music which was great to witness.

One of our fav’s of the weekend were the sexy electropop duo know as Phantogram who played during the day on Sunday. At some point in the set they announced their recent migration from upstate to NY, NY and the crowd went crazy giving them a big warm welcome which was well deserved. The music they are putting out and performing is top notch and they never fail to give a worthwhile performance getting the entirety of the crowd bopping and swaying with ease. We will undoubtedly be seeing them headlining festivals in the very near future.

Last but not least some of the veterans that participated in the festival Fiona Apple, Beck and the most Modest of Mouses. They all gave great performances. Fiona played a bunch of stuff off her recent release as well as some of the older records that we have all grown to love her by– reminding us of her amazingly beautiful/passionate presence on stage which we have surely missed in her hiatus from touring. Modest Mouse were calm and collected playing their spirit filled catalog and bringing joy to all of their loyal following the way they have been doing for years. Beck delivered a great finale to the festival with a set composed of too many recognizable hits to count and although it was not exactly a big bang of an ending to the exhaustively beautiful weekend it was great transition back into the reality and yet another work week.
