San Diego-based design studio Wedge & Lever redesigned Transworld Surf Magazine in late 2011, forgoing its commercial sport-mag roots for an almost art-mag feel. “Our objective was to support a photo-driven editorial model while breathing new life into the magazine format,” says the firm’s founders. “The intended result: sophistication that does not take itself too seriously.” While a buyout by its main rival has since shuttered Surf in its print form, these cool, clean layouts make a great case for the paper-and-ink edition.
