“I’m interested in those very everyday attempts to produce meaning.” say Damián Ortega. He creates amazing suspended , like his Cosmic Thing (2002), a gray Beetle, suspended suspended from the gallery’s ceiling by high-test aircraft cables. Ortega has meticulously disassembled the car, evidently taking the VW ideology of user-friendliness at its word.
Each part has been hung in an exaggerated constellation of doors, engine block, axles, wheels, upholster, and frame so that the whole looks blown out, all frozen motion and volume diagrammed in steel.
Ortega finds a way to turn everyday objects into extraordinary pieces of art.
