Modest Materials and Concepts: BUILD

BUILD has many faces and wears many hats. It is a structure, a piece furniture, a bleacher, a giant desk, a library, a gallery, a living room, and an auditorium. It is cheap wood simply bolted, and it is also concrete garden slabs.

This project by Federal Studio for Bureau A documents the structure they’ve created for Base GVA office in Switzerland. The structure was build to resist the strangeness of the context; the interior of a well-known 1980’s building in Geneva, which is anything but neutral. The architecture of the existing edifce poorly represents the the original ideas of Hundertwasser. Therefore BUILD’s abstraction leaves no room for organic lyricism, emphasizing the use of modest materials and concepts.
