Exhibitions & Openings for the Week of April 10

art weekly april

This week in Art Weekly we are taking you to Madrid, London, Los Angeles and of course home sweet home NYC for our top opening picks. Enjoy!

Richard Serra — “Early Works” — New York, NY

As you will see, this week is a special one for openings as two art world heavy-weights are exhibiting both new and early work including Mr. Richard Serra and Mr. Takashi Murakami, two of the most revolutionary artists of their respective generations.  Richard Serra’s work in particular is usually breathtaking in scale, the most reknowned having been created with massive rolls of sheet metal contorted to make sculptures that are so large that they become intricate mazes that patrons can walk through and physically explore. This particular show, however, is of Serra’s earlier works which are smaller in scale, and different in medium but equally as visually spectacular. As always, Serra provides a true feast for the eyes.

Murakami

Takashi Murakami — “Arhat” — Los Angeles, CA

It is a well known fact that Tokyo-born Takashi Murakami has, within the last decade and a half, singlehandedly written a new chapter in the history of contemporary art. Best known for confusing the lines between the high and low arts he took the traditional concept of commercial pop art, ran with it, smashed it to pieces, then rebuilt it anew all while incorporating his Japanese heritage and the fashion/commerical art world, as well as classical mediums such as painting and sculpture. Los Angeles has been brimming with phenomenal exhibitions these days and now Murakami is demonstrating his newest work at Blum and Poe Gallery on La Ciniega.

RachelWhiteread

Rachel Whiteread — “Detached” — London, UK

Turner Prize winner Rachel Whiteread is a master of sculpture and is once again putting her talent to the test at Gagosian Gallery’s Brittania Street location in London this week. Her works are impressive in size and scale and are usually full-form pieces rendered from concrete and steel large enough that, like Serra’s work, patrons can walk in and around the massive structures. The brilliance of her work in particular comes from a painstaking and intricate system of casting and recasting that creates structures that are so nuanced that they require up close observation and meditation.

Opening Reception: Thursday April 11, 6 – 8pm

Maier Aichen

Florian Maier-Aichen — “Florian Maier-Aichen” — London, UK

The sole exhibitor of photography on this week’s list, young Florian Maier-Aichen, is always guaranteed to impress. As a photographer, Maier-Aichen was educated on both sides of the pond, in the U.S. and in Stuttgart, Germany. As his dexterity in both painting and photography, his dual citizenship, and even his hyphenated last name reflect, Maier-Aichen is always successful at balancing  dual mediums, dual creative languages, dual cultures, and dual styles. Great work.

Dan Walsh

Dan Walsh — “Dan Walsh” — Madrid, Spain

Minimalism is unique in that it is an artistic movement that can consistently be refreshed and reborn. Dan Walsh serves as the perfect example of this phenomenon as he belongs to the elusive post-minimalist artistic movement, i.e. his work is based on a dense repetition of early minimalistic structures which creates an effect that is highly textured but remains, compositionally, rather clean and basic. This show will be 9 large paintings on canvas and, as exhibited in the above image, his work will be heavily linked to printmaking, pattern making, and textile. As a visual inspiration to our fashion lovers, pattern makers, and designers, his paintings recall patterns ranging from variations on traditional preppy gingham, to the dense textured weave of a smart Chanel suit, without skipping a beat. Fantastic!
