Welcome to Art Weekly, our guide to the best exhibitions and openings from around the globe.

AndrewKuo

Andrew Kuo  – “You Say Tomato” – New York, NY

With a cheery pop of color and a wide array of lively geometric shapes, Andrew Kuo always brings his unique brand of liveliness into any gallery space. He certainly adheres to historical tenets of geometric abstraction, but the colors he uses are usually oversaturated and intense, challenging the eyes and lifting the spirit into the present moment. It is also important to note that he maintains one medium throughout, acrylic paint on canvas, which provides a level of consistency that nicely offsets the unpredictability and shock quotient of the bright color palette he employs. Fun, abstract and poetic!

Opening: Thursday, April 4, 2013

MarisaMerz

Marisa Merz  – “Marisa Merz” – New York, NY

Born in Turin, Italy, but internationally recognized for her talent and contributions to modern and contemporary art worldwide, Marisa Merz has proven herself as a force to be reckoned with. The Arte Povera movement of the 1960’s, which often focused on using commonplace materials to make high art, was an attempt to undermine the elitist undertones that the movement believed had taken over visual culture. With works ranging from painting to sculpture and back again, Merz was also the only female artist associated with the Arte Povera movement and thus every move she makes is in its own way, rather groundbreaking.

Christian Marclay — “The Clock” – San Francisco, CA

Christian Marclay, a brilliant artist of Swiss and American heritage, blew New York away with his internationally acclaimed and mysterious masterpiece, “The Clock” at MoMA. Now, the exhibition is opening at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA) and the West Coast is awaiting the arrival of this stroke of genius exhibition with baited breath. Look out for a comprehensive review of this very special show to be featured here at Trendland.com next week after this Saturday’s much anticipated opening!

Assorted Artists — “The Gesture and the Sign” – São Paolo, Brazil

When top artists are all exhibited together it is the perfect opportunity to compare and contrast creatives who have proven themselves masters of their crafts. Although, as I have mentioned, I usually shy away from group shows for various reasons, I will always make exceptions for exceptional work! In this particular show being presented at White Cube Gallery’s São Paolo, Brazil location, all of the artists exhibited are very impressive in their own right. The painting presented above for example by young Jacob Kassay is canvas electroplated in various shades of grey, black, white and silver, creating an optical illusion of looking into a foggy mirror and reflecting dark shadows. Other artists in this varied show include contemporary greats such as, Mark Bradford, Damien Hirst, Kristin Baker, and Julie Mehretu. Excellent!

White Cube Gallery

April 3 – June 8 2013

Opening: Wednesday, April 3

DE LA CRUZ

Angela de la Cruz  – “Burst” – Milan, Italy

Nominated for the illustrious Turner Prize in 2010, Angela de la Cruz is presenting an exhibition of her work at Lisson Gallery’s location in Milan, Italy. De la Cruz has an incredible and inspiring life story that includes giving birth while in the midst of suffering a brain hemorrhage that left her comatose. Now a wheelchair user, de la Cruz incorporates her difficulties and turns them into positivity with art as her medium. Her paintings and installations, a reflection of her checkered health, are usually deliberately distorted or broken with many works fashioned out of pieces of hospital stretchers and wheelchairs. Her work has dark undertones, but is also fascinating and deeply inspirational.
