Chiharu Shiota’s Installations

chiharu shiotas installations

Japanese-born, Berlin-based artist Chiharu Shiota’s haunting installations are like beautiful, suffocating spider webs.  Shiota creates massive works that commonly consist of found objects such as shoes or chairs entangled in intricately spun webs of twine, electrical wire, or string. Her latest installations are a slight departure from her usual style – rather than weaving string, old suitcases are stacked to make a large wall. Shiota’s surreal installations leave viewers with a sense of isolation, nostalgia, and even fear. Shiota has held solo exhibitions recently in Japan, France, Spain, Germany, and the US, including a show at the recently closed Haunch of Venison Gallery in New York City last year.
