Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke reprise their roles as the much loved characters Celine and Jesse in Before Midnight, the third installment and follow up to Richard Linklater’s “Before Sunrise” and “Before Sunset” films.
In case you missed the first two movies, I will sum up: “Sunrise” introduces the two characters on a train somewhere in Europe, where Jesse, an American, and Celine, a French girl, meet and fall in love, after Jesse asks Celine to join him for a day in Vienna. “Before Sunset” brings them back together after a 9 year separation, this time they decide to stay together. Fast forward another 9 years, and here we have “Before Midnight”, taking place at the tail end of the couple’s Greek vacation. After Jesse drops off his eldest son from a previous marriage at the airport, he and Celine contemplate moving with their twin daughters back to the states, and a whole new set of questions regarding love, marriage, aging, and fate arise for them to ponder.
