It may have been staged in the New York Public Library, but Jen Kao’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection was by no means a staid event. For starters, it began in the dark, with a piped-in song prompting the audience to wonder: “Is there life on Mars? You wonder as you walk under the heavens above.”
What came next was a slew of out-of-this-world elements. Knee-length dresses, Judo pantsuits, and tons of asymmetric cuts and thigh-high slits were treated in an array of geometric prints and fluorescent pops. True to her Taiwanese roots, Jen was able to update the more traditional Asian silhouettes with a more futuristic, if not otherworldly, feel.
