De Balkonie is a new decor boutique in Amsterdam entirely dedicated to the urban apartment dweller looking to decorate their balcony. The first store in the Netherlands dedicated to balcony decoration, the innovative boutique highlights the future of urban dwelling and the shrinking concept of a backyard.
The co-owner of De Balkonie cited that his reasons for opening the store were that 70% of houses in Amsterdam have a small balcony, and that many of these balconies were currently being used as a place to store excess clutter rather than an appealing place to relax.
As larger portions of the population make their way toward already dense urban settings, many individuals will find themselves residing within high-rises that lack access to traditional backyards.
