Raf Simons first RTW collection for Christian Dior is nothing short of impeccable. The opening looks were clearly references in respect to Mr. Dior. The A line silhouette, shown with scarfs nodding to the Dior chokers of the 50’s and his love for black, white and neutrals. As the show progressed, Simons personality started to show up in the modernized fabrication, (the insane effervescent shimmer of the textiles and colors reflecting his devotion to all that is futuristic) his love for bold color combinations (note the red/pink and pale pink/bright yellow combo’s, typical Raf Simons) and attention to technical detail (embellishments, pleated organza, embroidered overlays……). Simons took original hemlines and shortened them, a lot…….he took original stripes reworking them into beautiful dresses sure to be seen on women all over the world next year. The traditional Dior elegant, crisp lines of the suit, tuxedo and LBD have been updated in a way only Simon’s can update through technical construction and again, these I can assure you will sellout the minute they get in stores. The hair was subtle and understated, as Dior would have shown back in the day, and Mr. Simons showed up in the make up, amazing, bold red and crystal eyes, very modern, very strong, very Raf ….This show was a big shoutout by Mr. Simons letting us know he is here representing and designing for a classic and timeless house, yet on his terms; the original foundation stays in tact, but the house on the foundation is very much a contemporary one constantly moving forward. Compromise and mediocrity are not options.
