To gauge the future trends in South American fashion, one needn’t look any further than Brazilian megabrand Cantão. Cantão is one of those brands that all our Brazilian girlfriends have worn since they were teenagers, and epitomizes the best of Rio fashion. For Spring/Summer 2013, Cantão shows us that like their loyal customers, they too have matured. Using lightweight fabrics, color without being too flashy, and easy to wear silhouettes, the collection highlights a more minimalist direction, while retaining the youthful and feminine spirit upon which the brand was built. Favorites included embellished shirts, gauzy sweaters, and tan necklaces that looked like stacked moleskin’s. It felt to be the most practical and stylish collection of the week. I see this collection translating into many markets, and will usher a more refined sensibility to the climate of Brazilian fashion, which we hope to see a lot more of at Fashion Rio.
