Notes on a Place by Kimmo Metsäranta

Kimmo Metsäranta´s recent works “Notes on a Place” is a series around themes concerning our everyday life. For years, the top attractions in Helsinki have been churches, museums, monuments, a few parks and an old sea fortress. With the series he wanted to add a few more spots to the list from the everyday, mundane scenery, places that are passed by on the way to must-see places. These new spots are in plain sight but unseen to most. The city is full of attractions if one chooses to look around.

“The images are isolated abstractions, modified interpretations, bare structures with only the essentials left. The images make the places become monuments.”

Kimmo, born 1978, lives and works in Helsinki. In his latest body of work Notes on a Place he concentrated on revealing details from a certain city, Helsinki – to break a larger entity into parts. He isolated buildings from each other in an abstract way and by doing that he transformed them from ordinary to significant. He gave them new features and put them on display.

The series is presently exhibited in Bang Bang -gallery in Helsinki. www.bangbang.fi
