The thing with some retreat spots is they seem to let their surroundings do the work. Throw out a few woven blankets, some herbal tea, and bongos, and any tranquil place is pretty reflection-ready.
Tucson Mountain Retreat rests on no such location laurels. Nestled in Sonoran Desert, Tucson, Arizona, and designed by local firm Dust, the place would be nice transported anywhere. It calms you just driving up to it, with a flat linear structure that criss-crosses quite nicely with the vertical ogre-sized cactii.
Spacious dining and living rooms extend to the desert landscape. Patterns on the charred cedar and winding staircase are beautiful, if not mesmerizing, enough to get you into a hypnotic state. And when you’ve had enough meditation for the day, there’s always the landscape for a hike or—for the less inclined—the thoughtfully-placed, hopscotch-friendly concrete volumes that lead to the entrance.
