Intriguing, disturbing or chocking, I just discovered Petrina Hicks photography. Hicks gently subverts the pervasive language of photography as it is used in advertising and publicity, creating edgy images that intrigue and disturb. While she primarily works with people, her works transcend the boundaries of portraiture as she finds beauty in perceived imperfections and renders idealized beauty strange.
Hicks’ latest series Beautiful Creatures appeals to our senses. Immediately alluring the large-scale, hyper-real photographs, are all rendered so clearly and with such control that they are reminiscent of advertisements, promoting a slick new television series perhaps, or teen clothing range.
Hicks’ is finishing her latest exhibition [April 9th] at the Stills Gallery in Paddington [Australia]
