Moving Between Land and Subject

Jackie Nickerson’s “Terrain” is a book of portrait and landscape photographs that explore the materiality of labor on a variety of Southern and East African farms.

The photos, taken all over Africa, show the basic task of gathering food. The poses is what distinguishes one image from another — bodies support giant sacks, masses of vegetables or leaves, a tangle of vines. Here, people take on multiple roles as transport, sculpture, and as people themselves.
