Polish artist Ewa Juszkiewicz reshapes classical paintings into her own surreal interpretation. The classical style of painting depicts women in the fashion of the time except for a peculiar twist. These portraits are masked by clothing, plants, and stranger still, hair.
By focusing on the familiar female portraits of the Renaissance era and the 19th century, Juszkiewicz is able to defamiliarize the subjects and create a new and unexpected image. Juszkiewicz is not changing the aesthetic of the paintings which remain the same to the period pieces, but instead uses her work to explore the function of the portrait and the role these women and their faces play in context.
