Contemporary Handmade Indian Rugs

Doshi Levien design studio puts their spin on Indian Rabari rugs. Nipa Doshi, one half of the London-based design duo, took inspiration from the hand crafted embroideries made by the nomadic Rabaris from the Kutch region. She even explored her own aunt’s embroidery workshop in Ahmedabad, where she found silk, cotton and metallic threads.

Applying what she saw, the pair designed three hand knotted rugs for contemporary carpet company Nani Marquina—compositions of loom-like grids interrupted by dots and curves, like “unfinished embroideries,” the duo says.
