Aron Klein is Chasing Monsters in his ‘Kukeri’ Series [Bulgaria]

British photographer Aron Klein’s ‘Kukeri’ series is a project documenting Bulgaria’s ancient annual pagan rituals performed in the countries most remote mountain of the Balkan region. The word ‘kuker’ comes from Latin (‘cuculla,’ meaning a ‘hood’) and it denotes a folkloric Demons, a masked man dressed in an elaborate suit of fur. Located in the Rhodope Mountain between Bulgaria and Greece, The kukeri wear carved wooden masks with the faces of beasts, hanging heavy bells around their waists as they dance and jump in arcane rituals intended to dispel the evil spirits which might otherwise bring bad fortune to their community. Aron gave us a captivating documentation of ancient folklore and contemporary ritual.
