Curated by architects Michael Hadjistyllis and Stefanos Roimpas, Anatomy of The Wallpaper is Cyprus’ fifth participation at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale and will be on view until November 23.
The wallpaper is a collective effort to expose the tumultuous historical past of Nicosia, capital of the island of Cyprus, and takes an allegorical form as layers of history become discovered in each detail. The excess of imaginary landscapes and overlaying of phantasmagorical images shows Cyprus’s true architectural character, resembling a multicultural mosaic, while a mixture of civilizations and cultures helps to uncover the city’s layered past.
