Adam Shirley is an artist living and working in Detroit. Trained as a metal smith, his work seeks to investigate the relationship between two and three dimensional objects, material and scale. Citing Italian painter Giorgio Morandi as inspiration, Shirley’s latest work is Still Life, a series of compositions referencing traditional still life paintings while focusing on the materiality of steel through volume and form. We are looking forward to Shirley’s upcoming collaborations with Alessi. We got the chance to visit Shirley’s studio last month at the Russell Industrial Studio for a closer look at Shirley’s sensitized work with steel, where we found a thriving design community devoted to maintaining the creative and innovative spirit of Detroit.
