A Parisian Home Redesigned Into A Fluid Space

The project French Metal Rack, designed by the Turin-based Andrea Marcante and Adelaide Testa from UdA Architetti, involves the restructuring of a Parisian apartment located in a 1930s property. This apartment is home to MilK editor-in-chief Isis Colombe Combréas, her partner, the photographer Karel Balas and their two children.

Completed in only 3 months, the architects were briefed to rethink the communal areas in the apartment and make them more functional while keeping intimate private areas. Their vision of modernity is one which cannot ignore the past, where architecture can become decoration and vice-versa.

The major design element used for the required zoning of public and private space was a black, matte perforated metal rack system, inspired by French designer Mathieu Matégot. The metal tubes set freely in space stand alongside decorative features characteristic of French homes, setting new visual lines, separating transition zones from rest areas.

Marcante and Testa have achieved an innovative and cutting edge design solution, which highlights rather than conceals the original geometry and character of the property and which features a clever zoning system.
