Businessman D.Félix Huarte is the thinker and architect behind the Sarría wine cellar. Built in the fifties, the cellar formed part of the complex´s main building. It was also where wine was once fermented and produced in a wide variety of large cylindrical vats composed of reinforced concrete.
With the modernization of winemaking, the vats and warehouse were left obsolete. And time combined with interventions disfigured the building´s original industrial character. “When an opportunity to relaunch the cellar in response to growing tourism came up, we had to take it. It allowed us to remove the structures that were added over time, specially the parts of the complex assigned to us.” These parts were to be given a new purpose and utility. Therefore, they initiated the restoration of the building, reclaiming the clarity, simplicity and modesty of the original structures, while maintaining the overall appearance of the complex intact.
