In business for 40 years, Joel Chen is renowned for refined taste, design intelligence, and innovation. As a young man, Joel grew up in colonial Hong Kong during tumultuous times in China. Educated in Great Britain, he later attended college in Los Angeles, where his passion for furniture and antiques was ignited. A scholar with enthusiasm and a brilliant eye, Chen has transformed a little shop on Melrose Avenue into a mainstay of the Los Angeles design world. It is a showplace where connoisseurs and beginning collectors alike are welcome to experience the visual and tactile qualities of beautiful objects and are encouraged to bring these qualities into their everyday lives. His story is one of history and legacy, but also one of adaptation and great taste. His progression from Asian works of art, to more traditional antiques and into the heavy-hitters of the Design field is reflected in the pieces on offer in the February 2018 sale.
