The Kumaon Hotel is a mountain retreat hidden away high above in the Himalayas. Named after the region it’s located in, the Kumaon sits 1600m above sea level near the historic city of Almora in India. Situated on in a ridge of Nanda Devi mountain, the hotel is accessible via steep paths that creep down from the main road.
The architecture was designed by award-winning architects Pradeep Kodikara and Juneshi Samaraweera of Zowa. The space shrouded by bamboos is an example of luxe restraint and environmentally conscious construction. Materials were sourced locally and the interiors of the hotel were kept simple and rustic to highlight the stones, bamboo, pinewood, and textiles. Even the furnitures were designed and made on site by local craftsman.
With 10 luxury suites, a library, a sun lounge and a gourmet restaurant, the Kumanon can no doubt offer a new kind of peace amongst the mountains, valleys, forests and lakes. Walking in Kumaon, staying in comfortable village houses, is a great way to experience rural life and stunning views in the foothills of the Himalaya.
