Phillip K Smith’s Lucid Stead

Phillip K Smith III Lucid Stead
A two day event that manifested into an exhibit with over 400 visitors over two weekends, US artist Phillip K Smith III got people talking. His latest installation ‘Lucid Stead’ took the natural object of a homestead cabin in Californian Joshua Tree desert and brought it to life beyond its normal constrictions.

Stripping the cabin of its wooden walls and replacing them with long mirror strips, Lucid Stead reflects and refracts the surrounding terrain. In daytime, the piece seamlessly blends into the desert with a surreal presence.

But as dusk sets in, the mirrored windows are illuminated by multicoloured LED panels, reflecting the sunset and giving off an alienated appearance.

An eye-catching piece of art, Smith has confronted the ideas of modern design by transforming how a typical homesteader in the desert would be perceived.
