A little known fact: much of the fashion landscape of Africa, in particular West and Central Africa, has been influenced by Dutch fabric manufacturer Vlisco. Having been founded by entrepreneur Pieter Fenterer van Vlissingen in 1846, the company, which pioneered the production of Indonesian batik cloth, today sees 90% of its sales come from Africa, according to a recent BoF profile. Exploring this rich heritage, photographer Koen Hauser teamed up with stylist and art director Maarten Spruyt to shoot the Hommage a l’Art collection, inspired by the regal women who wear the colorful fabrics.
