Now Reading: Charli XCX: I’ll Never Know
Written 6 years ago by
British babe, Charli XCX steams up the airwaves with her raspy pipes and grimy, girl-powered love songs. With a tone reminiscent of Metric’s Emily Haines, the 19 year old displays a maturity beyond teen years with a personalized sensibility for her own synth-laden species of emo-pop. Pulling influences from Spice Girls to Nirvana, Charli (aka Charlotte Aitchison) gave into a shameless affection for pop, while placing a glittery goth spin on her layered sound and began writing in her parents bedroom. Now, none other than MTV has named her one of 10 nominees in their Brand New For 2012 campaign. Impressive for a girl barely out of high school.
With a tropical tint close to Jamie xx, “I’ll Never Know” is the fun, uptempo sibling of her darkly colored track family on what will be her debut album once it is signed, sealed, and delivered. Ascending out of adolescence and blooming into one of the most coveted young artists around, Charli plays student by day–still attending London’s Slade School of Fine Art–and, recording artist by night. The anticipated album will feature collaborations with Robyn producer, Patrik Berger and Glasser/Theopolis London producer, Ariel Rechtshaid. Paired with these talents, Charli is destined to grow into a full-fledged success.
