NEIGHBORHOOD COMMISSION 2019: PINK BEASTS BY FERNANDO LAPOSSE

The Design District has chosen London based Mexican designer for the 2019 Neighborhood Commission. The installation will consist of strands of pink sisal tassels suspended through the trees guiding visitors to discover a collection of pink hairy sloths hanging from ropes, trees and arches. In collaboration with designer Angela Damman, the installation will also incorporate ten sculptural hammocks which will hang on metal structures and directly on palm trees for public use.

The mesmerizing pink landscape of Pink Beasts is achieved by dying the sisal fibers with natural dyes made from cochineals, tiny parasitic insects native to central Mexico which grow on the Opuntia cactus. Producing the world’s brightest natural red dye, the cochineals used in ?Pink Beasts are from an organic farm in the mountains of Oaxaca and handmade by a community of Mayan women weavers of Sacabah, Yucatan, including the production, cleaning and dying of the sisal. By interacting with ‘Pink Beasts’, visitors can be reminded that there are still sustainable and organic ways of achieving vibrant color. Moreover, Pink Beasts showcases the versatility of Fernando Laposse’s work.

INSTALLATIONS

THOM BROWNE INSTALLATION

Thom Browne will unveil his first large-scale public artwork on Thursday, December 5th, at The Moore Building during Art Basel Miami Beach. Palm Tree I (2019)—a twenty-one-foot tall palm tree constructed from yellow, green, and pink seersucker, pincord, and gingham oxford—evokes the iconic and unmistakable palette of an American summer. The installation will be curated by Deana Haggag, the President and CEO of United States Artists.

thom browne artist palm tree

Palm Tree I conjures the American dream as a primarily aesthetic idea in the cultural psyche, questioning the value of success as it relates to rest and leisure. In this work, Browne summons the disembodied ensemble of Americans on holiday, investigating the disturbing similarities between the workplace and vacation with recognizable uniforms, tasks, and schedules on both ends. The sculpture looms large in the space, as does the iconography of the tropical plant in the collective imagination as a symbol of paradise and relaxation. Situated between a black mirror and sandpit, the piece gestures at the interiority of a vacation experience as well as the performative nature of it. While Palm Tree I operates as cheerful pop art, it is also a meditation on hegemonic ideas of work and play sublimated in notions of Americana.

Date: Thursday, December 5th | Location: Moore Atrium, 4040 NE 2nd Avenue

LOCUST PROJECTS

The heroic adventures of Torpedo Boy and his battles in the Moundverse continue at Locust Projects with a new site-specific installation by Houston-based artist Trenton Doyle Hancock–his first project since opening his major survey at MASSMOCA earlier this spring. Hancock’s Moundverse is an epic and fantastical creation myth he started at age 10 with the creation of Torpedo Boy, a well-intentioned, deeply flawed alter-ego superhero who attempts to save the gentle Mounds from the evil Vegans.

His narratives–told through paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, video and installation–explore good and evil, authority, race, class, moral relativism, politics and religion, as well as making unapologetic nods to comic books, illustrations, animations, horror films, and toys.

Dates: Tuesday – Saturday from 11AM – 5PM | Location: 3852 N Miami Avenue

VIRGIL ABLOH SCULPTURE: “Dollar a Gallon” III, 2019

“Dollar a Gallon”is a sculpture by artist Virgil Abloh presenting a window into the artist’s study and research of the effect of advertising on the impressionable. The work serves as a comprehensive lighthouse of mixed media.

The framework is reminiscent of a gasoline sign relaying information about various types of gasoline and the respective pricing, while also being the commodity of an advertised sponsor. The series of global occurrences of this work was considered specifically for the Miami Design District, where its final positioning implies the concept of commerce and necessity re-packaged as a brand — while underscoring the relevancy via location. Ultimately the work is a signature of Abloh’s multi-lauded artistic logic emanating in a physical form not limited to any specific medium.
