The first time I heard Pigeon John get down on a record was way back in Jr High. At the time he still ran with hip hop collective crew LA Symphony and for the most part the music he was putting out would have been considered “Underground Hip Hop”. He left LA Symphony in pursuit of a solo career and since that time has dropped 4 studio albums, performed on several US tours, caught his fair share of commercial placement, been featured in publications including Entertainment Weekly, VIBE, SPIN Magazine, LA Weekly as well as featured in an interview on NPR.
His latest album, Dragon Slayer, is quite characteristic of the LA based rapper, just Pigeon John doing his thing, creating what he feels, and letting that energetic flow take its way. The entire work was produced by Herve Salters of General Elektriks (whom I am quite fond of) which gives a whole new context to Pigeon’s sound and the final product has some really good chemistry. “The Bomb” is definitely the highlight track taking on some fresh new momentum and tapping a more commercial market–immediately getting placement in a VW spot back when it was released in October 2010.
