Under his recently adopted title, Mark Ronson & The Business Intl.–the man with the Midas touch–is back. His newest studio baby, Record Collection, has been born as a prodigy with hot, make-your-booty-shake blue blood, not so dissimilar from Ronson himself. The album his “Business Intl.” recruits, including: Theophilus London, Spank Rock, Ghostface Killah, Andrew Wyatt (Miike Snow), a Count and Sinden Remix, the infamous Boy George, and Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon, among many other complimentary guests. Despite its September 28th US release date, the advent of Hype Machine and other blogosphere sites have undoubtedly stolen some thunder from Ronson’s record drop. Nonetheless, the star-packed album seems to shout “don’t take your eyes off me, I’m a talent time bomb that could explode any minute.” Well, he actually sings “I’m gonna break out!” supported by frenzied futuristic strings and keys (in “Lose It (In The End”). News flash, Marky Mark: you are out from behind the DJ deck and Ronson family shadow. Welcome to the spotlight.
The super-producer has a bulging repertoire under his belt, with credit for the colossal success of Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black, and collaborations with Christina Aguilera, Adele, Lily Allen, and Robbie Williams. What can be heard in Record Collection is a whole lotta genuine ambition and feeling, with definite hip-hop roots. In all honesty, one or two futuristic instrumental songs, like “Circuit Breaker” could even make perfectly hip music for a popular video game. Some of the tracks induce uncontrollable head-bopping, some make you want to “run around town with the peddle to the medal,” and others just flat out sweet-talk you into dancing. Without much surprise, it is “Bang Bang Bang,” that takes the cake. The single, featuring Q-Tip and MNDR, is still kicking chart ass since its July release and is worth a formal introduction.
