Thievery Corporation : Dance On Vaseline

This track never gets old.  More than a decade ago, the world groove duo, Thievery Corporation, dropped Abductions and Reconstructions, a full length album of trip-hop remixes and electro dub featuring the likes of Baaba Maal, Stereolab and the legend who wrote this track, David Byrne. And Dance on Vaseline makes you do just that.

If you’re not familiar, Thievery Corporation builds upon the vision of two Washington DC based DJs and recording artists, Rob Garza and Eric Hilton.  Seeing them live? Cue the beats and look out for four percussionists, a horn section, throw in the random sitar and don’t forget a host of singers from around the world.  Washingtonians will know them well from their yearly, week-long mini-residencies at the 9:30 Club or hot nights at the 18th Street Lounge.  The pair built their label, Eighteenth Street Lounge Productions, by scouting the musicians born across the globe that together bring a rich sound library that includes Ursula 1000, Chris Joss and Federico Aubele.

Look for the Thievery Corporation this summer.  After they return from Europe, they continue their summer tour with a late night Bonnaroo set in June before meandering to a September performance at Red Rocks with STS9.  I’ve seen these captains of world music more times than I can count.  Their parties are inevitably the best of the year.  Check them out and put this song on repeat.  Just make sure you have room to dance.
