Wieki Somers Studio features the work of Wieki Somers and Dylan van de Berg. The studio is recognized for their ability to find the fantasy in everyday things and translate them into objects through their knowledge and exploration of materials, technology and finishes. I especially loved the two projects featured here, “Chinese Stools” and “Trophees”. The “Chinese Stools” are inspired by the designer time spent in Beijing, during which they
discovered customized seats used by the working class, including security guards, street vendors and rickshaw drivers. Their original form nearly unrecognizable due to so much repair and modification, created so much charm and reflected an unspoken narrative about each person. They took this concept and recreated some of the silhouettes in aluminum and lacquer.
The “Trophees” , as they are called are a group of two drinking glasses that start with your most basic shapes of glasses and modify them into beautiful pieces of art.
