VPLSS

Victoria Bartlett’s VPL SS13 show at the Chelsea Piers themed “Exertion” was influenced by the Summer Olympics. Bartlett focused on a woman’s body, in a scientific and very specific way, researching kinesiology and musculature. Her signature elastics, activewear and cut outs were the backbone but this time she went way out of her comfort zone sending down flowing, billowy dresses, harem pants, boxy tops, pencil skirts and cool jumpsuits. She took a leap of faith not only with varied silhouettes and also with color and materials as well. Oranges in various shades, pinks and pastels entered her traditional earth/jeweled toned, mint green, gray palate, and the dreaded sequins, albiet distressed, made appearances, and quite successfully I might add. I never really thought I’d see sequins at VPL, and Bartlett probably never entertained the idea before, but i’m glad she did. It gave me a new perspective on something I would never really think I would be attracted to yet real creativity does just that. It makes us think differently about our set standards and ideas. The jewelry was fantastic, futuristic and organic and this season VPL collaborated with one of my favorite bag brands, Fleabags, for clutches and bags. By the way, Fleabags created an entire collection for them that will be in stores this spring. Recine’s wonderful hair, long fishtail braids down the models backs held down with elastic headgear and hair nets, was perfect for this athletically modern, organic ,practical and very strong collection.
