The trailer of Jean Luc Godard’s Le Mépris (Contempt) is as captivating as the film it depicts.
Le Mépris is a dense and profound portrayal of the collapsing relationship between screenwriter Paul Javel (Michel Piccoli) and his wife Camille (Brigitte Bardot). Javel is hired to write the script for a film version of Homer’s Odyssey and is caught between the demands of its American producer and European director (played by Fritz Lang). The seductive scenery and stylized cinematography belie the harsh truths unearthed by the story. The films depiction of artistic compromise is particularly pertinent as Le Mépris was Godard’s first big budget film.
