There Must Be More to Life Than This

Anthony Gerace has always encompassed both an intuitive and a mechanical approach, as well as a desire to preserve and monumentalize a past that seems to be forever on the cusp of falling apart.

He is really curious as to where the threshold point for a subject is—how much can you remove before the structure collapses, how long before the meaning of the thing you’re looking at gets washed away by kitsch and nostalgia — and collage seems to be the perfect medium. The work, while heavily process-based and mechanical, it is at the same time an attempt to create something that’s emotionally liminal and resonant, and is in a lot of ways about how these old pictures become unmoored from any sort of context or meaning outside of themselves. They become about the passage of time, not about any sort of actual history or particular moment.
