New David Bowie Video: The Stars (Are Out Tonight)

The music video for David Bowie’s The Stars (Are Out Tonight) is a stylish and lighthearted reflection on fame, ageing and sexuality. Directed by Floria Sigismondi the video accompanies the second single from Bowie’s celebrated comeback album The Next Day. Tilda Swinton and Bowie star as a happily married middle-aged couple living the quiet life in the suburbs. The pair’s striking looks and the stylized setting give the opening minutes a glossy, retro ambience. The calm is interrupted when a band, fronted by what looks like a young Bowie, and a wild celebrity couple invade the neighbourhood. The poised opening scenes soon give way to jittery camera work as the atmosphere darkens and the imagery become Lynchian. Finally Swinton transforms from a Bedford wife into an androgynous creature bearing an uncanny resemblance to Bowie himself.
