The Pursuit of Underground : Robert Gotzfried Tunnel Photography

Robert Gotzfried finds beauty in a place that we usually consider cold, dark and dirty. Since 2005, the German artist has been taking photos of the surreal subway tunnels mainly in Munich. According to the photographer, tunnels are everyday architecture which nobody ever pays attention to. They were built for functional and practical reasons and commuters do not specifically consider them visually appealing. For this project called “Tunnels”, he decided to capture the empty transportation channels. Looking like images out of a science-fiction movie, Robert Gotzfired’s work demonstrates futuristic and dynamic compositions where pure concrete, symmetry and architectural precision gets involved. A very challenging project since finding lights in tunnels is not easy. The photographer, who is based in Munich, wanders the underground from one station to the next, looking for a bright tunnel to shoot, while avoiding getting in trouble with security.
