Taro Shinoda’s Conceptual Art

art by taro shinoda

Tokyo-based artist Taro Shinoda became an artist after going to landscape gardening school. Exploring themes of science, philosophy, and humanity, his sculptures and installations are hand-built, often involving extensive technique and detailing. The primary concern of his artwork, is a harmony between nature and man. Says the artist, who is currently an Artist in Residence at Headlands Center For The Arts, “Our civilization has apparently been developed in pursuit of affluence and comfort and security, but the present situation has forced us to question: what is affluence? I think that it would be impossible to provide an answer as an artist – I think that this is beyond an artist’s duty. However, I believe that I can indicate the direction and I recognize my work as a tool which functions as a searching for direction.” Elements of traditional Japanese gardening remain in the large scale machines and scenes which draw upon his broad knowledge of engineering, natural sciences, and architecture.
