I had to go old school for this week, mainly because I can’t get enough of this song. Hopefully you’ll feel the same. Before there was Van Morrison there was Them. I mean they were Them. I mean, err…never mind. Founded in 1964 out of Belfast, the band released one single unsuccessfully before going in to record their version of Big Joe Williams, “Baby Please Don’t Go.” The band’s manager brought in session musicians to help record, one of them being none other then Jimmy Page. After a television debut the song jumped up to no. #26 on the charts and eventually cracked the top ten. And on the records B-side, Van Morrison’s now-legendary “Gloria“.

Prince, often known for his eroticism in music, came out with the highly sensual hit Darling Nikki whose lyrics are supposedly the reason Parental Advisory stickers on album covers were founded. The song is performed by Prince and the Revolution during a particularly emotionally climactic part in the epic 1984 film Purple Rain. The vocals crescendo from a slow story-telling type style to an intense solo of screaming, arranged ingeniously with some calmer guitar and drum work building up to an impressive rock solo of all the instruments combined. At the end of the song there exists a melodic mystery which is said to sing ‘Hello, how are you?/I’m fine, ’cause I know that the Lord is coming soon/Coming, coming soon’ in reverse.

SO FUN! San Diego resident Nathan Williams makes blistering, doo-wave rock about teenage boredom in sun-drenched suburbia. The self-described surf punk says his sound is about: “buried melody. A combination of musical influence both from my parents and friends growing up.” This means a stew of Beach Boys harmonies and the lo-fi energy of Nirvana and Sonic Youth.

Just when you thought he had won your heart over enough as the connivingly romantic Gossip Boy Chuck Bass, Ed Westwick wins it over yet again fronting his band The Filthy Youth. Another unsigned  indie injection into the British music scene that, much to our dismay, has not yet released an album. This song, along with all their others, is sure to keep you on your toes and definitely one to wake you up properly in the morning. The energy exerted by these filthy youths’ drum sticks, guitar strings, and vocal chords could make people that don’t even like rock want to dance around. The U.K. + rock has always seemed to be that inexplicable perfect equation.
