After the very well-received “Real Fantasies AW 2011” lookbook, the ever-surprising Prada has released the next part of the lookbook series, for the S/S 2012 collection.  Lindsey Wixson, Kasia Struss, Fei Fei Sun, Ginta Lapina and Daphne Groeneveld jump out of retro book covers, get tangled in highways and their super bad-ass shoes go autonomous and pose in front of traffic lights. This fantastic lookbook is the  handmade work of Jereon Koolhaas and Lok Jansen who blended together graphics, photography and handicraft. Their artistic aesthetics was the perfect match to Miuccia’s vision. For the result, shut your eyes and “see”.

Prada’s F/W 2012 collection was another tour de force,  as Navajo/PopArt inspired geometric prints, tailored and bejeweled, embroidered and chunky took the spotlight.  There were the obligatory black pieces, all embellished with crystals and plexiglass chips,  but color was the main attraction here: mustards, blues, and indigo’s.  Dresses and skirts over slim pants, stiff military inspired long tailored belted jackets, some empire, some high-waisted, and vests; all pieces  were different versions of color and prints of the geometric motifs, all layered over skirts and ankle length trousers.

The compulsory doctor bags came printed, and the season’s perfect shoe, the color blocked platform creepers, was done in a high heeled Mary Jane version.  This season, however, she showed them with a bit of a pointier toe.  Hair was ombre, tip dyed, very cool with the jet black eyes and orange/yellow eyebrows and white/cream cheeks.  This woman is sexy without showing too much skin and tough enough to indulge her vulnerabilities.  Backstage Miuccia stated, “I’m sick of theory. This collection is about the pleasure of fashion”, and this cacophony of color, print and embellishment somehow strangely becomes a seductive, celebration of quality, craftsmanship and eternal chicness, coveted for seasons to come.

Think of it like Grease, but without the raucous T-Birds boys—and a lot, LOT more glamorous. We’ve seen the images of Prada’s Steven Meisel-shot Spring 2012 campaign, but the newly released motion picture that goes along with it still takes my breath away. Prim and oh-so proper models, pastel perfect vintage cars, and twisting close-up shot angles really bring the brand’s pieces to life.

And the location itself—an anywhere-USA gas station set to a yummy blue sky—is the perfect setting to the 50s Americana fantasy film.

I dont know if I liked them or if I think they are cheesy, but Prada is offering something new in terms of womens shoe design. For their 2012 Spring collection they designed high heels and stilettos inspired by classic 50′s cars. Prada has always been very creative with their lookbooks. Once again thinking outside the box, they hired extremely talented Illustrators, Art Directors and CG artists. Their latest ‘MotionBook’ (or Video lookbook) is a real piece of art ! New collections are always said to be the designer’s “most personal one to date”, but in the case of Prada’s S/S 2012, it’s honestly the best description you can come up with. The season’s assortment of below-the-knee skirts, twinsets, and long boxy jackets are pieces we’d expect to find in Miuccia Prada’s own wardrobe.
