Studio Job x Barneys Collaborate This Holiday Season

Antwerp and Amsterdam-based design and art atelier, Studio Job, is collaborating with Barneys New York to design an installation for the holiday window display at their Madison Avenue flagship in addition to offering a curated selection of collectible items from Studio Job Gallery, which will be on view and available for sale at the Madison Avenue store. Barneys has also commissioned Studio Job to create the holiday graphics that will be used across all 14 of the retailer’s U.S. flagships and smaller regional stores.

On display from November 17, 2016 – January 2, 2017, Studio Job will join the ranks of artist Nick Cave, Ebony G. Patterson, Robb Pruitt as well as Trey Parker and Matt Stone of Comedy Central’s South Park, to create a holiday window display embodying the retailer’s annual theme of Love Peace Joy in the third Madison Avenue-facing window, just north of the main entrance.

Focusing on Love as their theme, Studio Job took inspiration from the iconic 1970s television show “The Love Boat.” The extravagant seven-foot boat is a tour de force of dozens of meticulously crafted parts. Partnering with interactive designers Invisible Light Network, the sculpture features silhouettes of people kissing – alternating between two men, a man and woman, and two women – projected onto the boat. Drawing from Dadaism and Surrealism, the display features kinetic claws pinching, arms rowing, keys turning, and gears all moving in unison. Additionally, viewers can find a rabbit, neon rainbow, lips, fish, and more throughout the rest of the boat, all hand-painted in a joyful array of colors.

“We first met Barneys’ Creative Director Dennis Freedman this spring during the opening of our exhibition at The Museum of Arts and Design. We clicked instantly and started talking about doing a project together. The resulting installation is a truly absurd, surreal, Dada-esque cruise ship presented in all the theatrical splendor of Barneys’ flagship windows, literally packed with too many ideas to explain and too many (mixed) messages to understand.”

Studio Job also designed Barneys New York’s Love Peace Joy – themed signature graphics that will be used across all of their 27 US locations during the holiday season. Drawing from the motifs of the overall campaign, Studio Job created a pattern comprised of peace signs, smiling lips, rainbows, doves, roses, and sunshine in a myriad of bright colors. This graphic will be used in all Barneys New York flagship locations for regional windows, hangtags on Barneys New York shopping bags, and across multiple consumer touch-points, creating a complete visual statement for the holidays.

Finally, the Love Peace Joy collaboration will also result in a series of exclusive products for Barneys, which echo the same eccentric elements as “The Love Boat” installation. The collection will consist of bags, coasters, cookies, ornaments, lollipops, nail art, clothing patches, pins, playing cards, placemats, puzzles, and temporary tattoos.

Studio Job Barneys New York products will be available at Barneys New York locations throughout the US including Madison Avenue, Downtown New York, Beverley Hills, Chicago and on Barneys.com. For more information on the collaboration, check out the Barneys luxury editorial site,
